    Unable to renew car tax?!

    Hi,

I hope someone can clarify my situation.

A year ago, I bought a new car off of the internet using one of these "lowest-price guaranteed" brokers. To cut a long story short, I got a discount of around £3k on a £20k car.....so far so good.

The main condition at the time was that the vehicle would be pre-registered to the broker and they would keep the vehicle registration documentation for 9 months.......again, no problem with that.

The car tax expires at the end of this month and I've still not received any documentation from them; I have a full, signed receipt from them itemising the fact that I've paid for the goods so ownership of the car isn't in question.......what's concerning me is the facility I don't seem to have to re-tax the vehicle!

The reminder form would have, by now(?), been sent to the Registered Keeper, yes? Aren't they legally obliged to either declare the vehicle SORN or do something about the tax renewal? (i.e, they have to take some sort of action, they can't just throw the paperwork in the bin?)

I had a look at taxing the vehicle online but it warns against doing so if the RK address is different to mine as that is where the tax disc will be sent.

So, basically, I'm in a situation where I want to tax my car but am unable to do so........what happens if I drive it after 31st August? Is there still a "14 day grace" period (which I know never really existed but was always deemed to).

What options do I have to stay legal?

Craven you will have to take a trip to your nearest VRO NOT post office - find them (Vehicle Registration Office) in the phone book. You need to complete a V10 application form and a V62 to explain the lack of a registration document! They may charge you (£15 i think) for the V62 - they may not - hey - they're a Gov. Dept. what do you expect. Take your Certificate of Insurance (not policy, schedule or renewal notice) and loads of patience - and you will eventually walk away with a tax disc.

Use your own judgment. Seek advice of a qualified insured professional if you have any doubts

Many thanks for that; I'd read bits about the V62 (but again it's full of "don't use this form if a, b or c applies" etc) but what's the V10 form for?

The V10 form is an application for a tax disc. The V62 is to apply for a registration document.
