I have decided that today I will give up smoking,
Therefore i thought we should have a forum on tips technics people have used to try and give up, success and failures.
Here my technique, last night whilst watching a film i thought my kids will probably smoke because i do. then i tried to picture my kids with a fag in there mouth, the thought was disgusting. so i decided it time to stop.
I have enough about 5 smokes left when they gone I am Starting.(or should that be stopping). and every time i think i want i smoke i just going to picture that disgusting thought.

I stopped by reading Alan Carr's book which was really useful. I also used nicotine patches at the same time to deal with the craving and I had some beads in my pocket to keep my hands occupied. Each hour and day that passed made me feel stronger and I took great delight in the fact that the monster within was growing weaker. As time passed I cut the patches smaller and smaller. I did it over a 3 month period.
I once tried to stop before and rushed the process. I haven't wanted a cigarette for over a decade.

Ok, That is what I call bad timing. Last night I just bought 500g of backy which would normally last me about 2 months. That being the case I will be 2 months or so behind you in giving up. As you are poss aware I dont like losing (especially to DCA with SD'd) so I am not going to give you the chance to get a head start on me so the backy is going to sit there and I too will give up today. You can be my quit buddy, someone to have a good screaming at when the need arises, Last time I gave up was a while ago I lasted four months then the s**t hit the fan with the debts and I started again. This time I have got quite a few friends on here to help me with the debt issues, fingers crossed we got ourselves a new life from now, smoke free.......:)
Here's the deal, my smoking costs me £20.00 per month (duty free, dont ask) so for each month I remain quit I will donate half to the site and put the other half aside for me to treat myself (a couple of pints in the pub at the end of the month) which I find hard to do at the moment as things are really tight.
What do you reckon.

Well done Stephen.. I gave up 8 years ago after being told by a Cardiologist it was either give up smoking or die.. I chose the first option..
Just remember there are a lot of us out here that are willing to help you, be you kicking posts when things become bad and yes just keep that thought in your mind..

Why don't you sell it Foxy to some other poor unfortunate person who for whatever reason is unable to give it up.
You could then donate half of the proceeds to the site as well..
Anyway, good luck to all of you who decide to join Stephen in giving up smoking. It is not an easy task as I know, but it is well worth it in the long run..

I got something to keep us both occupied. I have just been offered an interview with the fire service. I have got to do a 15 minute presentation on what different presentation methods I will use for (ready for it)
presenting fire saftey talks to:
1) Children
2) Adults
3) Elderly
4) Minority Groups
5) Adults with learning difficulties
The presentation does not have to be about fire, just about the different techniques I would use to get the message across to each different audience...
I have a few ideas but any input would be greatfully received.

I remember the last time I tried to quit - the first 12 hours roughly were in fact the worst - it settled down after that. I folded because my folks smoke and I saw them the next day (picking up the eldest after a sleepover) and the taste got me.
So if you two are genuine stay away from other smokers now you've managed today until it is fully under control - you've done bloody well, don't forget that.
Foxy as for your point. This and previous Governments could've at any point made it illegal to sell fags with addictive properties within them but they won't because smokers bring in billions and pay for the NHS. This is why the Gov genuinely don't want smokers to quit - their efforts are lip service to pander to the liberals who fall for it.
The whole sub idea behind the smoking ban is 'we might lose 10% who quit BUT the remaining 90% will smoke twice as much because it's now verboten and they have less opportunity to do so!'
I'm a smoker, I'm a drinker. I used to go hours in the pub without having a fag because my mates didn't smoke. The last time I was in a pub because I knew I couldn't light up, I was outside every 45 minutes.
Remove freedom, entice desire.

If i can share a tip with you both that worked for me when i gave up 10 years ago. I thought long and hard about why i wanted i give up and wrote down 10 reasons for quitting on a sheet of paper. I carried this sheet of paper everywhere i went and when i wanted a smoke or thought i would cave in i would take out the sheet and read through it. Sometimes i would have to read it several times until i lost the urge. Worked for me.

As you have all been so kind in helping with my financial difficulties I thought I would offer some support
I stopped 8 Years ago after many years of attempts, half attempts and well teeling everyone I was attempting (but not really)
This last time was different and I will try and tell you why. I will break it down into small posts so that is easier to read.
1. WHY did i smoke.
Seems like a stupid question. i was addicted to nicotine so I smoked, if I didn't I felt like ripping the head of the cat and posting it through next doors letterbox. (dont worry I do not have a cat...... it was next doors )
I think that many people struggle at first because they think quitting is just a case of out willing the part of you that wants to smoke. In other words trying to muster enough willpower to resist smoking.
I have a diferrent approach and theory to what may be required. There are two things you have to achieve before quitting. One is to change your perception about what a cigarette can actually do for you and the second is to gain the permission of your inner self to let go of smoking as a safety net.
Perception.
I had many attempts to quit before I finally quit for the last time. I know it is the last time because something changed inside me. It was what some people may call a reverlation. A bolt out of the blue, A bang on the head. Whatever you want to call it it was an awakening experience.
It started after someone asked me a question.
"why do you smoke ?"
a simple, innocent question that had me reaching for the
answers I always gave, I am addicted to nictoine, it is a habit, I enjoy it. But on this occasion I said nothing. I just stared into space and thought.
What is it about these dried leaves that has me so
miserable? I done't enjoy smoking, I tollerate it.
It is not a habit it is a security measure against anxiety and if I am only addicted to nicotine then every smoker should be able to stop with NRT.
For the first time since I started smoking at 11 years old I asked myself the question.
"What do cigarettes ACTUALLY do ?"
not what do I THINK cigarettes do but what do the really, actually do ?
The answer I have since discovered is absolutely nothing. Oh, apart form one thing. They actually give you anxiety..........
fullstopsmoking
12-08-2009, 11:46 AM
2.Give or take (anxiety that is)
That may sound strange to people who smoke as the one thing every smoker believes is that smoking relieves there Anxiety. What I had to do was go back to well before I smoked my first cigarette. Most people will perhaps only look as far back as their first. But for me it all happened well before then. I saw most of my family smoke. My mum, brother, aunties and uncles. All smoked. They would tell me time and again, " never
let me catch you smoking, It will kill you" followed by them turning around and lighting one up. So the clear message to me was. Wow, they know cigarettes will kill them yet they still do it. Smoking must be fantastic.
Then there was the many films and T.V programms that showed beautiful, successfull, tough, rebelleous often rich people smoking their heads off. At that age I wanted to be like that.
So by the time it came to eleven and that first cigarette was put in my hand I was already a smoker. In my head I had a vision, a concept, a perception of what i thought smoking was.
So when I did finally light that first cigarette and it made me sick and dizzy, afraid and excited I was sure I had done something wrong.
As the chemicals and additives in the cigarette started to react with various hormones in my body it made me feel something that should have been reserved for the moments in my life that are very rare.
The chemicals in the Tobacco had triggered the primal reaction called the Fight or Flight response. It is a thing that should only be activated in extreme danger. It is there to make sure you can stand and defend yourself or run away to ensure survival. But here I was in the midst of full blown fear with no way of switching it off. normally when the threat has gone the body will naturally react by secreting what is known as
the ' all clear ' hormone into the body. Hovever. I could not see what I was afraid of. what the danger was.
At that point I convinced myself that I had smoked the cigarette wrongly. Surely this was not why millions of people risk their lives to feel like this. So I light another. Now this is where the real problems start.
I was in the full throws of the fight or flight response. and can see no way out. I mentioned a hormone above known as the 'All clear' hormone. It is this I was trying to get to. That calm state again as I was before I
lit that first cigarette.
fullstopsmoking
12-08-2009, 11:51 AM
3 The Tales of a Hormone
That hormone is called DHEA (it has a very long chemical name but it is most commonly known as DHEA) Nicotine has been found to stimulate DHEA. So by lighting the cigarette I was giving myself the impression that the cigarette had just made me safe.
However what I didn't do was link the two things together. The fact that the first cigarette was the cause of these extreme feelings in the first place. All I now remember is that smoking a cigarette made it all go away. That is until the levels of the good hormone (DHEA) start to fall again and the levels of the bad hormone (cortisol) start to trigger the same fear response again. So what I now had was a distorted memory for what a cigarette actually did. I forgot about the anxiety and fear it created and focused on the relief it appeared to give.
All this at an age when I was changing from a child to a young adult. And the thing I know now is that the main difference between a child and an adult is your ability to cope with stress and anxiety. What I did by smoking is give all of the responsibilty over to a cigarette. I never developed my own coping strategies or technicques. Why would I when I could just light a cigarette and it would appear to vanish.
The second part of the quitting process for me was the ending of smoking. I had to link the two events together. The smoking of the previous cigarette and the feelings I got when I wanted another. (the reaction described above) I always thought that to quit smoking I had to want to not smoke more that I wanted to smoke.
Which is true but if you force this issue to much you will struggle. I used to fight like a dog not to give in and have a cigarette but the more I fought the more tired I became until, in a moment of weakness and vulneribility I sucumbed. But this time I realised something. Willpower is not an external fight, I was not fighting any one or anything outside me. It was the internal fight between my concious mind and my sub conscious mind.
The conscious mind is the part that says I want to quit, I do not like smoking. Whereas your subconscious mind can not decide what is right and wrong or good and bad. It is like the opererating system in your computer. It will do the same routines over and over again until the program is changed. What you are doing by just saying you are going to quit is like asking your computer to change is routine without permission. If you do not have permission or more importantly you do not show it or give it a new program it will just carry on doing the same thing.
You have to convince your subconscious mind that it is not cigarettes that are making you feel better. Then there will be no conflict. The conscious and subconscious mind will agree and you will not have to fight anymore. Your perception and permission are there and you will see that smoking does nothing for you. Only then will you be sure that you will never smoke again.
I will post more if you want, just let me know if any of this helps.

I gave up 4 months ago, tried Alan Carr twice lasted 8 months first time and 6 months second time. tried patches, gum etc but found when I stopped them I was still wanting something which made sense as my body was still getting the nicotine.
So 4 months ago was having a really bad time with debts etc so decided to go cold turkey, it was hard but I think this is the best way, the first 2 weeks were hell but I knew that was going to be the worst, I also made sure I told everyone that I was giving up, that meant that everyone gave me some support or took the p***! which made me want to do it even more.
So far so good, I can now go out drinking and don't fancy one which was the hardest part when I first gave up.
Anyway keep going and good luck!

I had my last cigarette at midnight on 30 July and have been clean for 27 days. I have done it using Champix and I have to say that following earlier experiences it has been so much easier. I also used the Paul McKenna Stop Smoking CDs for the first 2 weeks having read the book last year and not got round to doing anything about it. Don't know if it's just the Champix or combination of the two, but I've felt really calm and my ds has told me I'm a nicer person now I don't smoke.
I can't recommend Champix enough, although every professional I spoke to tried to push (v heavily) nicotine replacement, which I did not want, it has been great. A few side effects but hey compared to the breathlessness, smell, cough etc that goes with the smoking I can put up with them for the 3 months I have to take the drugs.
Since I've stopped I've heard of so many of us that all stopped around the same time and now there's even a thread on here!! It's weird how when you may need the support it's all around you.
Good luck Stephen and everyone else - I hope you keep off the ciggies!!!

I quit for 11 months about 8 years ago and it was good, sadly friends who smoked let me down one night on a beer binge.............:(

Hey, I did it, so you can too! I was no different to any other smoker. I was smoking up to 60 a day and my athsma was choking me half to death every morning, yet I'd still pump myself full of ventolin, make a cup of tea and light up a ciggie. Crazy eh! But that's how it is when you're hooked.
Honestly it's hell giving up, you have to accept that. At least for me, it helped to think like that because knowing it was supposed to be hell drove me treat it like a battle.
It'll be 7 years on 1st Jan 2010. I'm still carrying the extra 4 stone I gained after giving up, so I plan to tackle that as soon as Xmas is over. After giving up ciggies, giving up food will be a walk in the park! :p

I gave up in the middle of a 6 day drinking binge at a music festival. I had drank and smoked so much by the end I was looking rther green and coughing so badly I was turning my chest inside-out. So I said enough is enough. Stopped on Day 5 of the festival (the last day) and for the first couple of days because I was still ill I didnt crave. After the first couple of days I just kept saying to myself "One more day, just one more" and I managed to keep it up.
That was 7 months ago.
The hardest day was a night in the pub about a month after as it was the first night out since the festival and I usually smoked like a chimney when beer was involved. By this point all my friends knew and stood by my determination not to light up. Once I got throught that first fag free beer night it became much easier, because I knew I could do it, as I already had done it!

Certainly isn't easy and maybe giving up whilst trying to sort all this out wasn't the best idea I've ever had lol! However, as I now have no car :( I'm also doing a lot of walking which (wait for it) ...... I'm actually enjoying :)
Big test for me will be over Christmas when we're all going to my brothers for a few days... who smokes...

Several techniques are available in the market to quit smoking. Laser therapy is one of the most efficient, modern, and successful method. This technique is in practice since the past 20 years. In dealing with withdrawal symptoms and cravings, laser therapy has been proved more effective than other treatments. This technique is totally painless and safe.
How this therapy works
Stop smoking laser therapy is based on the 5000 years old ancient Asian healing technique of Acupuncture, though it does not use needles. Acupuncture reduces tension, increases blood circulation, and relaxes the body. Laser therapy is a non-medical treatment. It is external, drug-free, non-thermal, and non-invasive. It works on various energy points on hands, face, and ears. This therapy involves soft, cold laser beam of low energy equivalent to a light bulb. It produces a warm, pulsating, and tingling feeling in patients. But, some patients don't feel any sensation at all.
Treatment – The treatment program consists of three phases:
1st phase – Laser therapy uses cold, soft light to stimulate certain energy points on the body already chosen by the doctor. These points are related to addiction and habit. The laser stimulates the nerve endings which results in endorphin secretion. Endorphin is the natural hormone present in human body. It helps in keeping body calm and relaxed. It makes it easier for the person, willing to quit smoking, in coping up with the withdrawal symptoms and nicotine cravings by relaxing the body.
2nd phase – In this phase, counseling is done to deal with the withdrawal symptoms, cravings, living habits, and diet routine after treatment. This helps in fast recovery.
3rd phase – This phase deals with the back-up support. Full support is provided during and after the treatment.
The whole treatment continues for three days. On the first day, there will be a one hour session of relaxing treatment. After two days, second session will be held. It comprises more relaxing treatment along with progress review. Then, after one week, third session will take place which will include more relaxing treatment and further more time for reviewing the progress.
Advantages of stop smoking laser therapy
This therapy is quite inexpensive when you compare it to your monthly expense on cigarette purchasing. This laser therapy also helps patients loose weight by suppressing appetite. It does not involve any harsh chemicals which other methods of quitting smoking involve. That is why it is completely harmless.
Stop smoking laser treatment is the safest and surest method for people trying to quit smoking. It has no side effects and the results are great. If you have tried other treatments, and have gained no success, then this therapy is certainly for you.
